Belarus Forced to Shut Down Russian Relay Stations Under Ukrainian Ultimatum

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy issued an ultimatum to Belarus on June 19, demanding that it shut down four Russian-controlled signal relay stations within a week. The deadline was met on June 22-23, with reports indicating the stations were disabled and Russian drone activity along the border dropped noticeably.

The relay stations had been coordinating Russian drone and missile strikes against Ukraine since Russia's invasion in 2022. Zelenskyy warned Belarusian leader Alexander Lukashenko that if the stations weren't shut down, Ukraine would strike them directly.

Belarus, which has served as a logistics backbone for Moscow's military operations without formally entering the conflict, decided to comply with Ukraine's demands rather than absorbing potential kinetic hits on its soil. This move is seen as a significant development in the war, with fewer strikes meaning less infrastructure damage and marginally better economic conditions in Ukraine.

The shutdown of the relay stations also has implications for the crypto community. Ukraine has received substantial crypto donations to fund its defense since 2022, while Western regulators have tightened controls on Russian and Belarusian crypto services, including enforcement actions against mixers, exchanges, and OTC desks connected to Russian entities.
