Credit Unions Push Senate to Refine Crypto Bill Provisions
America's Credit Unions are urging the Senate to refine the CLARITY Act before voting on it. The organization sent a letter to the Senate, expressing their support for the bill's main provisions but also highlighting areas where they need further clarification. Specifically, the credit unions want to see changes made to the prohibition on interest and yield for payment stablecoins.
The CLARITY Act aims to clarify the regulatory framework for digital assets, allowing federal credit unions and federally insured state-chartered credit unions to participate in these activities under the oversight of the National Credit Union Administration. The bill's sponsors have worked closely with the Senate Banking Committee to ensure that credit unions can engage in digital asset services without fear of regulatory hurdles.
However, the credit union organizations are concerned that the current language could stifle innovation and limit their ability to serve local communities. They argue that the prohibition on yield for payment stablecoins is too restrictive and may prevent credit unions from providing meaningful access to traditional financial services.
