Base Chain Adopts Zero-Knowledge Proofs for Enhanced Security
Base Chain, an Ethereum Layer 2 network incubated by Coinbase, is upgrading its core architecture to leverage zero-knowledge proofs (ZKPs) in a significant shift towards enhanced security. The upgrade will introduce a trusted execution environment (TEE) combined with ZK proofs generated by Succinct Labs' SP1 virtual machine, eliminating the need for a multi-day challenge period associated with optimistic rollups.
The integration of ZKPs is expected to provide cryptographic finality instead, thereby reducing the path to one-day finality. This change will not only secure chain finality but also offer a 'trust-minimized' mechanism for moving large amounts of capital back to Ethereum's mainnet. Base Chain becomes the largest single Ethereum operator to implement ZK proofs for finality to date.
