BitMine's Staking Gains Eroded by Costly Options Bets

BitMine made headlines in the crypto space by generating nearly $46 million from staking Ethereum last quarter. The company's push to turn its large corporate Ethereum holdings into a recurring income source was successful, with approximately 98% of its revenue coming from staking and validation.

However, BitMine's options strategy proved costly, resulting in a $92.1 million loss on Ethereum-linked derivatives during the quarter. This is roughly twice the revenue generated by its staking operation over the same three months.

The company attributed $78.6 million of the loss to expired option contracts and another $14 million was due to exercised positions. A small gain on open contracts provided only a partial offset to the losses.

BitMine's general and administrative expenses also climbed to $37.3 million from $744,000 a year earlier, largely due to digital-asset custody and treasury-management fees, higher salaries, and increased cash and stock-based compensation for directors.
