Public Skepticism of AI and Crypto May Pose Challenge for Tech-Backed Candidates

A new Politico poll has shed light on the growing unease among American voters about the increasing influence of artificial intelligence (AI) and cryptocurrency in politics.

The poll, conducted from April 11 to 14, surveyed 2,035 U.S. adults online and found that 45% of respondents view cryptocurrency as too risky, potentially hurting industry-backed candidates. Meanwhile, 44% say AI is developing too quickly, raising concerns about job security and safety.

The tech sector has poured millions into lobbying efforts to push for a federal framework on AI regulation by 2027. However, the polling suggests that these efforts may run into broader public skepticism regarding job security and safety. Over half of Americans say they have never and would not consider buying or trading cryptocurrency, while nearly half of respondents say it is likely to eliminate more jobs than it creates.

The results highlight a growing disconnect between the capital being deployed by Silicon Valley and the sentiment of the average voter. While tech-focused super PACs are spending heavily in competitive 2026 races, voters may be less likely to choose candidates backed by these groups. In hypothetical head-to-head matchups, Politico poll respondents were much less likely to choose candidates backed by a campaign group seeking looser regulations on artificial intelligence.
