AI Agents Gain Control Over Crypto Wallets With New Model Context Protocol
Crypto wallets are about to get a significant boost in functionality with the integration of AI agents. The new system developed by Coinbase enables AI clients to directly interact with smart wallets, eliminating the need for users to write custom code. This model context protocol server connects AI agents to Base Account smart wallets, allowing them to check balances, swap tokens, sign messages, and execute DeFi transactions.
The non-custodial design of this system ensures that user control is maintained while delegating execution to the AI layer. Every transaction requires explicit approval from the user before it can be executed on the blockchain. This approach addresses a major concern in the crypto space: user security.
The Base MCP model uses OAuth 2.1 for authentication, ensuring secure connections between AI agents and smart wallets. Compatible AI clients include Claude, ChatGPT, Cursor, and Codex, each with quickstart guides available. Once connected, these agents can perform a range of operations, including sending native tokens, transferring ERC-20 tokens, executing batched contract calls, and processing payments through the x402 protocol using USDC.
The integration of AI agents with crypto wallets opens up new possibilities for DeFi applications. By allowing users to execute transactions directly from their AI clients, this system streamlines interactions with major DeFi protocols, including Uniswap and Morpho. This development marks a significant step towards the integration of AI and blockchain technology.
