Irish Authorities Recover $35 Million in Cryptocurrency from Dormant Bitcoin Wallet

Irish law enforcement has made a major breakthrough in their efforts to recover cryptocurrency linked to a convicted drug dealer. The Criminal Assets Bureau (CAB) collaborated with Europol's European Cybercrime Centre to gain access to one of 12 Bitcoin wallets associated with Clifton Collins.

Collins, who was jailed in 2017 for cultivating and selling cannabis, had purchased approximately 6,000 Bitcoins between 2011 and 2012 using proceeds from his drug operation. The value of the seized Bitcoin has soared to $390 million over the years, despite most of it remaining inaccessible due to lost access codes.

The recovered wallet transferred the 500 Bitcoin to an institutional platform, marking the first movement of funds tied to the case in nearly a decade. However, thousands of Bitcoins remain locked, and officials say that accessing them depends on recovering or reconstructing the missing keys.
