Philippines SEC Greenlights Tokenization of Real-World Assets
The Philippines Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) has signaled its readiness to tokenize real-world assets (RWAs), indicating that the necessary legal frameworks are in place. SEC Commissioner Quevedo emphasized the potential benefits of blockchain technology for the capital market, including new opportunities for stock exchanges.
Quevedo highlighted the issue of fraud affecting overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) who seek to invest their money. Tokenized investment products, he believes, can provide a safer and more legitimate way for OFWs to participate in investments.
The SEC has also strengthened its efforts against investment scams, utilizing artificial intelligence to identify and track unlawful operations. The regulator is working with major technology platforms like Google and TikTok to prevent unauthorized investment promotions.
