Injective vs Hyperliquid: Two L1 Blockchains Compete for On-Chain Derivatives Trading

Injective and Hyperliquid are two Layer-1 (L1) blockchains that aim to provide on-chain derivatives trading with real-time order books. Both chains have their unique architectures and liquidity models.

Hyperliquid's design is centered around its perpetuals exchange, with a matching engine and order book written in Rust. The chain targets median latency below 100ms using a custom HyperBFT consensus algorithm. In contrast, Injective is a general-purpose finance L1 that ships with an exchange module as a first-class citizen.

The two chains have different strengths and weaknesses. While Hyperliquid has the deepest perp order book in DeFi and highest volume, it also has concentration risk due to its reliance on a single product. Injective's MultiVM architecture allows multiple smart contract languages to target the same liquidity layer, but it lags behind Hyperliquid in terms of volume.
