Trump Signs Orders for Quantum Computer and Post-Quantum Cryptography Upgrades

US President Donald Trump has signed two executive orders to advance quantum computing and cryptography in the country. The orders aim to take a 'cohesive, whole-of-government approach' to accelerate the deployment and commercialization of quantum computing.

The first order targets the development of a quantum computer at a scale intended to initiate the era of quantum-enabled scientific discovery. It establishes the Quantum Computer for Application Development and Discovery Science (QC-ADDS) national effort, which must be updated within 180 days to support commercialization and industry partnerships.

The second order focuses on securing the US against quantum-assisted cryptographic attacks by upgrading to post-quantum cryptography. The Office of Management and Budget and the National Cyber Director will lead a nationwide migration to post-quantum cryptography, ensuring the nation's data stays secure as quantum technology evolves.
