Argentine President Linked to $5 Million Libra Token Deal Under Investigation
Argentine President Javier Milei is facing scrutiny over his alleged involvement in a $5 million deal promoting the Libra token. Forensic analysis has revealed that Milei exchanged messages with lobbyist Mauricio Novelli at the time of the token's brief market surge, which temporarily raised its value to $4 billion.
The investigation, which began after authorities examined Novelli's phone during a judicial probe, uncovered a draft document outlining a payment plan. The plan divided payments into three segments: an initial $1.5 million installment in tokens or cash, a second $1.5 million tied to public endorsement of crypto entrepreneur Hayden Davis on X, and the remaining $2 million as a consulting contract with Milei and his sister Karina for blockchain or AI services.
Experts confirmed that the contract code referenced in the draft was not publicly available at the time of Milei's social media post, adding context to the timing of the promotion. The investigation remains ongoing as authorities review digital evidence, including recovered communications and asset records, as they continue to investigate payments related to the promotion.
