Canada Moves to Block Crypto Donations in Politics
Canada's proposed bill to ban cryptocurrency donations to political campaigns has sparked interest among experts and politicians alike. While the country has yet to see any significant use of crypto in past elections, regulators are taking a proactive approach to prevent potential risks.
The proposed ban is part of the Strong and Free Elections Act – C-25, which aims to prohibit contributions made in bitcoin and other digital assets. The move is seen as a precautionary measure, despite the fact that no major federal party has ever publicly accepted crypto donations.
Regulators are concerned about the pseudo-anonymity of digital assets, which makes it difficult to identify contributors. This concern led Canada's Chief Electoral Officer to recommend tighter rules, including closing a provision that effectively exempted small crypto contributions from the regulated financing regime.
