Michigan Lawmakers Propose Moratoriums on Crypto Mining Expansion

Michigan's cryptocurrency mining industry could be facing new challenges with the introduction of House Bill 5882. The legislation aims to regulate high-intensity computing facilities by strengthening the zoning powers of local government units.

The bill, introduced on April 23, 2026, by State Representatives Miller, Dievendorf, and Paiz, proposes that municipalities have the authority to impose moratoriums on the construction of mining facilities and data centers. The proposed moratoriums would have a maximum duration of six months, with a possible one-time 90-day extension under justification.

The regulation also requires local governments to hold transparent public hearings before making any decisions regarding the construction of high-intensity computing facilities. Additionally, it prohibits elected officials from signing non-disclosure agreements (NDAs) with development companies.
