ISO Publishes Groundbreaking Blockchain Interoperability Standard

The International Organization for Standardization (ISO) has made a major breakthrough in the development of blockchain technology by publishing a standard for interoperability. After nearly a decade of work, ISO 82098 is now publicly available, enabling any Distributed Ledger Technology (DLT) to connect with another without requiring protocol changes.

The development of the standard was led by Gilbert Verdian, CEO of Quant, who chaired Working Group 7, the committee responsible for developing the interoperability framework. Verdian's team published a proposal in 2016 outlining a vision for a common framework that would transcend any single protocol or vendor.

The multi-gateway architecture used in the standard allows different DLTs to communicate with each other through a common interface, without requiring changes to how individual ledgers function. This approach enables 'any-to-any' connectivity and connects to existing networks seamlessly.
