Quantum Threat to Blockchain Security Could Arrive Sooner Than Feared
XRP Ledger engineer J. Ayo Akinyele has warned that quantum computing could pose a serious threat to blockchain security sooner than expected.
Akinyele, who spoke on the Voice of Web3 podcast with CoinGape's CEO Sunil Sharma, revealed that advancements in AI have accelerated his timeline for quantum threats from 2035 or 2030 to as early as 2028 or 2029.
The engineer pointed out that recent breakthroughs in AI-assisted quantum computing hardware development could expedite the process. This is because Nvidia released open-source models aimed at building reliable quantum computing hardware, which has received relatively little attention but may yield significant results in the coming months and years.
Akinyele's comments come amid growing concerns about the impact of quantum computing on blockchain security. With its ability to perform certain computational tasks much faster than conventional computers, quantum technology could degrade cryptographic algorithms used to secure internet infrastructure.
