Sophon Abandons Proprietary Blockchain for Base Layer 2 Network
Sophon, a Layer 2 blockchain project, has announced that it will discontinue its proprietary blockchain and migrate to Base, an Ethereum Layer 2 network incubated by Coinbase. This strategic shift marks a significant change in Sophon's priorities, as the company seeks to redirect resources from blockchain infrastructure management toward consumer-focused application development.
By transitioning to Base, Sophon expects to reduce its annual infrastructure costs by approximately $3 million. The company will allocate these savings toward expanding its portfolio of consumer applications and accelerating product development. This move is part of a broader trend within the blockchain industry, where some projects are choosing to leverage established Layer 2 networks instead of maintaining independent blockchain infrastructure.
The SOPH token will transition from serving as a gas token to becoming directly linked with product-generated revenue through planned buyback and token burn mechanisms. Sophon's upcoming applications, including Fire, XP, SophPlay, and SophAI, are expected to contribute to this strategy.
