Trump's Cryptocurrency Holdings Derail CLARITY Act, Delaying Regulatory Framework
The proposed CLARITY Act, aimed at providing a regulatory framework for the US crypto market, has hit a major roadblock due to a political confrontation over ethics clauses governing political officials' cryptocurrency holdings. President Donald Trump had previously offered a revised compromise on July 16, but it was met with resistance from Democratic lawmakers.
The proposed legislation would assign oversight of the market to both the Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) and the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), while also introducing measures to protect client funds in case of bankruptcy and a regulatory tolerance regime for decentralized finance developers.
However, the debate has shifted from financial oversight issues to concerns over Trump's own cryptocurrency-related income, with nearly $1.4 billion revealed through public financial disclosures on July 1. Democrats argue that this justifies stricter regulations than what is currently proposed in the CLARITY Act.
