Crypto Giants Suffering from 'Authority Debt' as Search Rankings Shift
For years, crypto giants such as Coinbase and Binance dominated search engine results due to their high-authority domains. However, since Google's Helpful Content Update in March 2024, these platforms have seen a significant decline in organic traffic. According to a study tracking 124 crypto domains across 31 months, the highest-Domain-Rating platforms are losing ground to competitors with smaller backlink profiles.
What is 'Authority Debt'? It refers to the gap between a domain's accumulated link authority and the quality of its pages. Platforms like Coinbase, Binance, and Uniswap have been building this debt by publishing thin explainer pages that wouldn't rank on merit alone. However, since Google folded the Helpful Content system into core ranking, these sites are now being penalized for their outdated content.
The study found that backlinks and Domain Rating no longer provide a protective relationship with traffic outcomes. In fact, the correlation between these metrics and outcome is slightly negative. This challenges the conventional wisdom in crypto SEO that building more links can fix a ranking slump.
