Holyoke Police Warn of Rising Cryptocurrency Scams
The Holyoke Police Department has issued a warning about the increasing threat of Bitcoin scams in the area. Recently, they were able to prevent a resident from falling victim to one such scam.
A caller contacted the person, claiming that they had an active arrest warrant for missing jury duty and demanded $6,000 to avoid being arrested. The scammer instructed the victim to withdraw money from their bank account and deposit it into a local Bitcoin kiosk.
However, before the transaction was completed, the victim realized they were being scammed and contacted the Holyoke Police Department. Detective James Parnell assisted the resident in canceling the transaction, and the victim is expected to receive a refund from the kiosk operator.
The police department has reported that these types of Bitcoin scams have defrauded western Massachusetts residents of over $2 million in the past two to three years. They urge community members to remain cautious of cryptocurrency fraud and to hang up immediately if they receive a phone call claiming they owe money and must deposit cash into a Bitcoin kiosk.
