Algorand Foundation Aims for Quantum-Resistant Security by 2027

The Algorand Foundation has announced plans to implement post-quantum cryptography across its entire network, aiming to complete the transition by the end of 2027. The initiative seeks to prepare the blockchain against potential risks arising from advances in quantum computing.

The roadmap includes the adoption of Falcon, a post-quantum digital signature scheme designed to resist attacks from advanced quantum computers. Hybrid accounts will combine traditional cryptography with post-quantum signatures, enabling a gradual and secure migration for users. The scope of the upgrade extends beyond wallets, also updating multisignature systems and institutional custody solutions.

Initial implementation phases are scheduled to begin in 2026. Algorand's CTO, Bruno Martins, emphasized that preparation must begin before quantum threats become practical, even though no quantum computers currently exist capable of breaking modern cryptographic standards. Estimates from companies such as IBM, Google, and Amazon suggest this capability could emerge around 2030.
