US Treasury Sanctions Alleged Money Laundering Networks Linked to Sinaloa Cartel
The US government has taken a significant step in its efforts to combat the Sinaloa Cartel's fentanyl trafficking operations. The Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) announced sanctions on two alleged money laundering networks accused of helping the cartel move proceeds through cryptocurrency channels.
The operation was coordinated by Homeland Security, the DEA, and Mexican financial intelligence officials. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent emphasized that the administration will continue to target terrorist cartels and their fentanyl trafficking networks to protect communities.
Among those targeted were Armando de Jesus Ojeda Aviles and Jesus Alonso Aispuro Felix, who allegedly oversaw a network responsible for laundering proceeds from fentanyl sales on behalf of the cartel. The Treasury also identified six Ethereum wallet addresses connected to the operation, including five associated with Ojeda Aviles.
