European Central Bank Study Raises Questions About DeFi Decentralization

The European Central Bank (ECB) has published a research paper examining the decentralization of four major DeFi protocols: Aave, MakerDAO, Ampleforth, and Uniswap. The study found that while token ownership is distributed among thousands of addresses, the top 100 token holders control over 80% of each protocol's total supply.

The researchers note that this high concentration of ownership could undermine the decentralized nature of these protocols, which are supposed to be governed by a community of stakeholders rather than a central authority. In practice, decision-making power is often concentrated among a small group of large token holders who can vote on key issues such as new feature implementation and listing.

The study found that in each protocol, the top 20-50 token holders control a significant majority of the voting power, with some addresses controlling over 10% of the total supply. While the researchers acknowledge that this is not unusual for DeFi protocols at an early stage of development, they caution that it raises important questions about the decentralization of these systems and their potential impact on regulatory frameworks.
