Cryptocurrency ATM Scams: A Growing Concern for San Antonio Residents
As the popularity of cryptocurrencies continues to grow, so do concerns about scams involving cryptocurrency ATMs. In San Antonio, local law enforcement and federal agencies have teamed up to educate the public about the risks.
Cryptocurrency ATMs are becoming increasingly common at gas stations and convenience stores across the city. However, scammers are exploiting these machines by manipulating their victims into buying cryptocurrency on their behalf. Once the money is in a digital wallet, it's difficult for authorities to recover.
According to FBI statistics, the number of reported losses due to scams involving cryptocurrency ATMs has been growing. In 2025, scammers made away with over $333 million, compared to nearly $247 million in 2024.
The U.S. Secret Service is warning people to be cautious when using cryptocurrency ATMs. Special Agent Brian Gibson said that the agency is working closely with local law enforcement to raise awareness about the issue. 'We can trace it, but it moves a lot faster than traditional money,' explained Investigative Analyst Laura Bravo.
Bravo advised people to be wary of payment requests made through cryptocurrency and to verify claims independently before making any transactions. She also emphasized the importance of being cautious when dealing with strangers who claim to represent legitimate institutions.
