Somerville Residents Reject Bitcoin Data Mining Center Plans
Residents in Somerville, Alabama are opposing plans to build a large bitcoin data mining center near their homes. VoltCore, the company behind the proposal, wants to construct the facility on 15 acres of land near Union Road in southeast Morgan County.
The project would require installing infrastructure on four nearby properties through easement agreements, which has already faced resistance from homeowners. So far, every homeowner has rejected the plans and the incentives offered by VoltCore, including cash payments, free internet service for a year, and natural gas lines.
Concerns have been raised about potential noise pollution, road damage, and health risks associated with the project. Residents also pointed out that there are currently no regulations in place to protect neighborhoods from being infiltrated by data centers.
Morgan County Commission Chairman Ray Long said he has only heard rumors about the proposed data center and would not support it if residents continue to oppose it.
