US Government Sets Deadline for Post-Quantum Cryptography Migration
The US government has accelerated its plan to migrate federal systems to post-quantum cryptography by setting a concrete deadline of December 31, 2030. This move comes after President Trump signed two executive orders on June 23, which mandate that federal agencies and contractors transition their systems to NIST-approved post-quantum cryptography standards.
The first order, EO 14409, establishes specific deadlines for transitioning federal systems to post-quantum cryptography standards. It requires NIST to initiate a post-quantum cryptography migration pilot by December 31, 2027, and federal agencies must complete the migration of high-value assets to PQC standards for key establishment by December 31, 2030.
The second order, EO 14411, focuses on accelerating US quantum technology development more broadly. The policy trail leading up to these executive orders began with National Security Memorandum 10 in 2022, which highlighted the risks posed by cryptanalytically relevant quantum computers that can break widely used encryption like RSA and elliptic curve cryptography.
