FATF Warns Incomplete Crypto Regulations Fuel Illicit Finance Amid Stablecoin Misuse

The Financial Action Task Force (FATF) has issued its latest report on the regulation of digital assets, warning that incomplete regulations are allowing criminal groups to use them for illicit purposes. The task force found that while 83% of surveyed jurisdictions have advanced crypto regulations and implemented the Travel Rule, others are lagging behind.

The FATF emphasized the need for stronger oversight of offshore Virtual Asset Providers (VASPs) to close regulatory gaps. It also warned about the misuse of stablecoins, citing a case where a Cambodia-based money laundering node issued a stablecoin that was marketed as immune to asset freezing.

FATF President Giles Thomson highlighted the urgency of implementing FATF standards, stating that 'criminal networks continue to abuse virtual assets for illicit purposes and exploit their borderless nature to commit fraud and scams, evade sanctions and launder the proceeds of crime.'
