Trump to Address Strait of Hormuz Demining at G7 as Crypto Enters Maritime Conflict
The Strait of Hormuz, a critical waterway for global oil shipments, has become increasingly treacherous due to Iran's deployment of around 6,000 sea mines. To address this issue, President Trump is expected to discuss mine-clearing efforts at the upcoming G7 summit in Évian-les-Bains, France. The UK and France are leading a proposal for a Europe-led mission to clear the strait, which requires Washington's endorsement.
The US has already begun its own preliminary mine-removal operations, deploying destroyers and underwater drones since April 11. Pentagon officials estimate that complete mine clearance could take up to six months. However, an immediate Europe-led initiative is designed to commence following a peace agreement between the US and Iran.
Iran's financial situation has been strained due to US sanctions, which have limited its access to the global financial system. In response, reports suggest that Iran may be accepting payments in Bitcoin and stablecoins for safe maritime passage through the strait. This development highlights the intersection of cryptocurrency and international conflict.
