'Crypto Mom' Hester Peirce to Depart SEC, Join Regent University School of Law
Hester Peirce, affectionately known as 'Crypto Mom' in the digital asset industry, has announced her departure from the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) after nearly three decades in Washington D.C. She will be joining Regent University School of Law as an associate professor.
Peirce's term at the SEC officially expired on June 5, 2025, but she was allowed to continue serving for up to 18 months due to a U.S. law that permits commissioners to remain in their roles until a successor is named and confirmed. However, her recent announcement confirms she will be leaving the agency earlier than expected.
During her appearance on the 'Rollup' podcast, Peirce discussed her priorities before departing the SEC, including pushing for regulatory changes to allow more companies to go public earlier and eliminating the trade-through rule. She also expressed her enthusiasm for joining Regent University School of Law and working with the next generation of law students.
Peirce's exit is expected to create a leadership void at the SEC at a critical moment for the crypto industry, particularly as the agency considers its 'innovation exemption' for digital assets. However, Peirce was quick to temper expectations regarding the initiative, stating that it has not yet been released and should not be viewed as a full-throated endorsement of blockchain technology.
