Bitcoin's Lightning Network Revolutionizes Transaction Speed and Cost
The Lightning Network is a solution to one of Bitcoin's long-standing issues: transaction speed and cost efficiency. By moving most activity off the main blockchain, it reduces congestion and allows for faster and cheaper transactions.
The network uses payment channels to enable users to send Bitcoin without recording each transaction on the blockchain. This process starts by opening a payment channel between two users, which is recorded on-chain. Once open, users can send multiple payments instantly within the channel without updating the blockchain.
When the channel is closed, the final balance between both parties is calculated and recorded as a single transaction on the Bitcoin blockchain. This reduces many off-chain payments to just two on-chain actions: opening the channel and closing it.
