Utah's Heber City Bans Cryptocurrency ATMs Amid Concerns Over Fraud
Utah's Heber City has joined a growing list of municipalities banning cryptocurrency ATMs, citing concerns over fraud and financial exploitation. According to local reports, the city council passed an ordinance prohibiting the installation and operation of such machines on April 7.
The move comes after police Chief Parker Sever suggested the ban following a presentation by the Utah Attorney General's Office on cryptocurrency-related scams.
Cryptocurrency ATMs have been linked to various types of financial crimes, including 'pig-slaughtering' scams, where scammers target victims online and convince them to deposit money into their accounts. The machines often charge high transaction fees, ranging from 20% to 40%, making it a lucrative opportunity for scammers.
