Sui Mainnet Hit by Consecutive Outages Due to Software Issue
The Sui mainnet has faced significant disruptions in recent weeks, with two consecutive outages occurring in May 2026. The issues were caused by a software issue introduced by the v1.72 update, which interacted with existing gas fee logic and created consensus-level failures.
According to Sui's official status updates, the first outage occurred on May 28, lasting approximately 5 hours and 55 minutes. During this time, validators were unable to finalize user transactions, resulting in a network stall. A coordinated validator upgrade eventually exceeded the threshold required for recovery, restoring service.
However, the issue persisted, with the Sui mainnet experiencing another outage on May 29 during an epoch transition process. Validators were again unable to finalize a consistent network state, leading to another interruption in transaction processing. This time, the team admitted that the second outage was also caused by the same core problem of how Address Balances interacted with gas fee logic.
Market data showed that SUI experienced a 7-8% drop in price on May 29 due to the outages. Trading activity increased as users reacted to halted network operations and delayed transaction confirmations. The incidents highlighted execution risks for traders and DeFi users who rely on timely transaction settlement.
