Canadians Remain Skeptical of Cryptocurrency Amid Support for Ban on Crypto ATMs

A recent survey conducted by Research Co. has shed light on Canadians' perceptions of cryptocurrency and its potential impact on society.

The survey found that only 41% of Canadians claim to be 'very informed' or 'moderately informed' about bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies, with familiarity decreasing with age. Those aged 55 and over are the least likely to be informed about cryptocurrencies, with only 25% claiming to have a good understanding.

Despite some support for cryptocurrency among younger Canadians, those who perceive it unfavorably outnumber those who view it favorably by a margin of almost three to one. This skepticism may be due in part to negative media coverage and high-profile cases of cryptocurrency-related crime.

The survey also found that Canadians are more likely to associate cryptocurrencies with street-level crime (37%) and money laundering (49%). Not surprisingly, British Columbia topped the list for regions where this connection is strongest, given its history of money laundering in casinos. However, majorities across Canada support the federal government's proposal to ban crypto ATMs, which it has deemed a 'primary method' for money laundering.
