Cryptocurrency Fuels Military Drones Procurement by Russia and Iran-Linked Groups

Cryptocurrency is increasingly being used by groups with ties to Russia and Iran to acquire low-cost military drones and components. According to a report from Chainalysis, these organizations have been able to raise significant funds for their purchases.

The majority of the funds raised by pro-Russian groups since 2022 total over $8.3 million, with a notable shift towards using stablecoins over Bitcoin due to their price stability. This trend is particularly evident in on-chain transactions that match the approximate $2,200 price of drones from KB Vostok, a sanctioned Russian firm.

On the Iranian side, fund flows linked to the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps have also been identified, with inflows to associated wallets surging during times of conflict. This highlights the potential for cryptocurrency to be used as a tool for circumventing traditional financial restrictions and sanctions.
