Cryptocurrency Holder Loses $6.7 Million in Physical Attack
A recent case has highlighted the growing threat of physical attacks on cryptocurrency holders. A user with accounts on both Kraken and Coinbase exchanges lost $6.7 million after an attacker forced them to withdraw funds from their accounts.
The attack is believed to have been carried out through a 'wrench attack', where the attacker physically coerced the victim into initiating withdrawals. The stolen funds were then laundered through Tornado Cash, a privacy mixer that has been sanctioned by the US Treasury's Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC).
This incident underscores the challenges in preventing laundering through Tornado Cash, despite efforts to sanction and restrict its use. The attacker was able to move the stolen funds quickly through the mixer, making it difficult for authorities to track the transactions.
