Bhutan's Bitcoin Reserves Plummet by 66% in 2025
The Royal Monetary Authority of Bhutan has been steadily accumulating Bitcoin since its inception, with the nation reportedly mining and acquiring cryptocurrency years before public disclosure. However, a recent analysis of on-chain data reveals that Bhutan's government has significantly reduced its Bitcoin holdings, selling approximately $150 million worth of the cryptocurrency in 2025.
This represents a 66% decline from the nation's peak holdings in 2024, when it held around 13,000 BTC. Despite this reduction, Bhutan still retains substantial BTC reserves, with current holdings standing at 4,453 Bitcoin valued at approximately $315 million at current prices.
Experts suggest that this move may reflect a broader reassessment of digital assets within sovereign wealth frameworks and could influence future policy discussions worldwide.
