Coinbase's Base Layer2 Blockchain Boosts Security with Zero-Knowledge Upgrade

Coinbase's layer2 blockchain Base has announced plans to enhance its security infrastructure by adopting zero-knowledge (ZK) technology from Succinct.

The integration of Succinct's SP1 zero-knowledge virtual machine (zkVM) and a trusted execution environment (TEE) will strengthen the existing optimistic rollup structure, allowing for one-day transaction finality. This upgrade aims to improve network security and resilience by replacing the current multi-day challenge period with cryptographic finality.

Base currently operates as an optimistic rollup, which assumes transactions are valid and verifies invalid transactions within a dispute period. However, this approach has its drawbacks, including the potential for disputes to take several days. The adoption of ZK technology will provide immediate cryptographic proof that a batch of transactions was processed correctly.
