Quantum Computing Threat Not Just a Technical Challenge, Says Fireblocks CEO
Quantum computing poses a significant threat to the cryptographic signature schemes employed by Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies. However, according to Fireblocks CEO Michael Shaulov, migrating to post-quantum encryption is primarily a coordination issue, rather than a technical challenge.
The entire internet industry needs to adapt to post-quantum encryption, with many algorithms already available, Shaulov stated. This includes Bitcoin, which has previously updated its signature schemes once or twice in its lifetime.
Researchers have accelerated the timescale for the emergence of a quantum computer capable of breaking modern cryptography, known as Q-Day. Some predictions suggest that Q-Day could arrive as soon as 2030, with some researchers deploying publicly accessible quantum computers to crack cryptographic keys.
