Bitcoin Developers Eye Removal of Redundant Fee Signaling Feature
Bitcoin developers are proposing to remove an outdated feature from wallet software that signals a user's intention to replace a transaction with a higher fee. This option, known as Replace-by-Fee (RBF) signaling, was once useful for speeding up transactions on the Bitcoin blockchain but has become redundant and a potential privacy issue.
With full-RBF now the standard network policy, explicit RBF signaling is no longer needed, and its removal is being considered to prevent unnecessary digital fingerprints from being left in transactions. However, implementing this change requires careful planning to avoid making transactions processed through different wallets look distinct on-chain, which could make them easier to track.
Developers are weighing the benefits of removing RBF signaling against the potential complexity and risks involved. As one developer noted, deleting the signal is not as simple as it seems, as every sender must choose a sequence for each input, and using a default number that is widely agreed upon by the wallet community may be the best approach.
