Crypto Scam Hits Shipping Firms Near Strait of Hormuz
Shipping firms operating near the Strait of Hormuz are facing a new layer of financial risk as fraudsters pose as Iranian officials to demand cryptocurrency payments in exchange for safe passage.
The scammers, who claim to offer clearance to cross the strategic waterway, have been contacting operators with structured messages requesting fees in Bitcoin or USDT. According to a report by Marisks, these unknown groups have successfully mimicked official communication styles and procedures, making it more likely for companies to fall victim.
The development comes amid earlier reports suggesting Iran was considering imposing transit fees payable in cryptocurrency for vessels passing through the strait. However, experts warn that companies making such payments could face serious sanctions risks.
