Solana Prepares for Alpenglow Upgrade to Achieve Faster Consensus

Solana is preparing its validator set for Alpenglow, an upgrade aimed at achieving faster consensus. The upgrade will enable BLS public key registration on mainnet ahead of Validator Admission Ticket activation.

The current system requires each validator to present their signature of votes for everyone to agree. However, with Alpenglow, the system overall will validate a single aggregated proof, reducing the load on the consensus layer and decreasing the need for individual vote verification.

This is expected to enable faster blocks while keeping Solana's parallelized validation approach. It should be a win-win: developers and users can look forward to a more seamless onboarding experience through faster confirmations, which is particularly beneficial for DeFi, payments, and streaming apps.
