Istanbul Blockchain Week 2026: A Shift towards Institutional Focus
The Istanbul Blockchain Week 2026 conference marked a significant shift in the tone of the event, moving away from retail speculation and meme coins. The focus was on infrastructure, regulatory compliance, and how to bring traditional finance on-chain without repeating past mistakes.
The inaugural Istanbul Institutional Markets Summit (IISM) sat at the center of the program, covering key topics such as custody, compliance, stablecoin utility, and tokenization. Speakers emphasized the need for strict custodian regulation, full custodial insurance, and Big Four audits to attract institutional capital.
Turkish officials also made a significant presence felt, with Buğra Ayan, head of the IT department at the Presidency's Directorate of Communications, delivering a keynote on using customized in-house language models in public service. The government is committed to building a robust blockchain ecosystem, with plans to tokenize yield-bearing assets and agricultural supply chains.
