MercadoLibre Discontinues Mercado Coin

MercadoLibre, a leading e-commerce platform in Latin America, has made a significant decision to discontinue its cryptocurrency, Mercado Coin. Launched in 2021 on the Polygon network, the digital currency aimed to facilitate easy payments and fight inflation in regions like Argentina.

However, the project failed to gain traction due to several reasons. The company cited low user adoption, with most users preferring fiat or stablecoins for daily transactions. Additionally, regulatory pressures from governments in Brazil and Argentina led to increased taxes on crypto gains and restrictions on capital flight.

MercadoLibre has decided to shift its focus towards stablecoins, such as USDC, which are considered safer and more practical for payments. The company's core business – e-commerce and Mercado Pago – continues to grow strongly, with a 17% revenue jump in Q2 earnings.
