22-Year-Old Sentenced to Prison for Role in $263 Million Crypto Theft
A 22-year-old man from Newport Beach has been sentenced to 70 months in prison for his role in laundering over $263 million in cryptocurrency for a multi-state criminal enterprise. The funds were stolen from online gaming platforms, with the stolen money being used to purchase luxury items such as private jets and exotic cars.
The individual, who previously pleaded guilty to laundering at least $3.5 million, was part of an organization that included database hackers, organizers, target identifiers, callers, and residential burglars targeting hardware virtual currency wallets. The group's greed was described by Justice Department officials as 'cartoonish' due to their extravagant spending.
Law enforcement agencies investigated the case, with a US District Court judge ordering the individual to serve three years of supervised release after his 70-month sentence. The investigation revealed that most members of the criminal enterprise were unemployed men under 20 years old.
