Indiana Bans Bitcoin ATMs Amid Growing Scam Concerns
Indiana has become the latest state to restrict the use of bitcoin ATMs, following concerns over widespread scams. In response to a growing number of financial crimes in Evansville, Governor Mike Braun signed an emergency declaration banning the operation of virtual currency kiosks in the state.
The decision was prompted by a collaboration between local authorities and state lawmakers, who were informed about the issue by the Evansville Police Department's Financial Crimes Unit. Officials report that the number of scams has doubled each year in the city, with an average loss of $11,000 per incident.
House Bill 1116, which authorizes the ban, was enacted after testimony from affected parties and organizations such as AARP. The legislation aims to prevent scammers from exploiting vulnerable individuals through these machines.
