Bitcoin Surges Above $80,000 on US Regulatory Progress
Bitcoin's price surged above $80,000 on Friday as news of the US government's progress in regulating the cryptocurrency industry boosted investor sentiment.
The Senate Banking Committee voted 15-9 to advance the Clarity Act, a bill that aims to establish a comprehensive regulatory framework for cryptocurrencies in the US. The legislation is seen as a major development for the industry, which has been calling for clearer guidelines on how to operate.
However, gains in Bitcoin's price were tempered by concerns over the ongoing US-China trade talks and tensions with Iran. US President Donald Trump's hawkish comments on Iran sparked a sharp increase in the value of oil, causing some investors to become more risk-averse and limit their exposure to cryptocurrencies.
The Clarity Act now needs to be considered by the Senate Agriculture Committee before it can move forward for a full Senate vote. The bill will require the support of at least 60 members to pass.
