Ontario Senior Loses $900K in Crypto Scam Using Deepfake of Mark Carney
An Ontario senior lost $900,000 in a cryptocurrency scam that used an AI deepfake of Mark Carney, the former Prime Minister of Canada.
Judy Skene, 86, from Sault Ste. Marie, invested heavily in a crypto investment platform after seeing a video on Facebook that appeared to be Carney promoting it.
The video was a deepfake, created using artificial intelligence to convincingly mimic the Prime Minister's likeness and voice.
Skene lost $900,000 after being convinced by scammers that her investment had tripled in value and she should put more money into it.
