Ronin Blockchain to Migrate to Ethereum Layer-2 Scaling Network on May 12
The Ronin blockchain, which supports popular games like Axie Infinity and Pixels, is planning a significant migration. The network will transition to become a true Ethereum layer-2 scaling network on May 12.
This move marks a major shift for the Ronin blockchain, which has been operating as an Ethereum sidechain since its launch in 2021. With this migration, the network aims to take advantage of the benefits offered by layer-2 technology, including low costs and high throughput, while inheriting the security guarantees provided by Ethereum.
As part of the migration process, RON token inflation will drop dramatically from over 20% to less than 1%. Marketplace fees flowing to the Treasury will also increase by 2.5 times, jumping from 0.5% to 1.25%. Additionally, 90 million RON tokens previously allocated for staking will be redirected to the Ronin treasury.
The transition is expected to take around 10 hours, with users facing a short period of mainnet downtime between 11 am and 9 pm ET on May 12. During this time, games may not be available. A new 'proof of distribution' system will also be launched as part of the migration, automating RON rewards for developers and replacing manual allocation processes.
