Crypto Trader Hit with $24M Extortion
A significant cybercrime has shaken the cryptocurrency community as a trader known for their online presence suffered an estimated $24 million loss in a violent extortion. According to reports, the perpetrator targeted the individual's wallet, draining it of about $23.6 million in AETH-USDC.
The tracking data reveals that the attacker swiftly converted approximately $20.34 million into DAI, a stablecoin used for trading and other financial transactions. This move is likely an attempt to obscure the origin and flow of the stolen funds.
A smaller portion of the loot was transferred to Arbitrum, before being bridged to Hyperliquid, where it was further laundered. The funds were eventually used to acquire Monero (XMR), a privacy-focused cryptocurrency known for its ability to mask user transactions and identities.
