Balance Stablecoin Collapses Amid Oracle Manipulation Exploit
Balance Coin, an algorithmic stablecoin designed to maintain a $1 peg, suffered a catastrophic collapse of over 99% after being exploited by an attacker. The incident occurred on Wednesday, with the token's value plummeting from near its dollar peg to just $0.0014, effectively wiping out nearly all of its $3.5 million in nominal value.
The attacker manipulated the protocol's oracle to report a fake bitcoin price, which was then used by the lending contract to liquidate multiple vaults that should not have been eligible for liquidation. This allowed the attacker to instantly swap the seized collateral for a profit of around $912,000.
SlowMist, a security firm, revealed how the attacker manipulated the system, highlighting the risks associated with relying on external price feeds and the need for robust security measures in decentralized finance (DeFi) protocols.
