Senators Clash Over DeFi Regulation in CLARITY Act Debate

U.S. Senators Van Hollen and Cynthia Lummis recently weighed in on the 'DeFi provision' within the CLARITY Act during its deliberation stage. While Senator Van Hollen supported the amendment, Senator Lummis spoke out against it.

According to Senator Van Hollen, the DeFi provision aims to hold developers accountable for creating tools that facilitate illicit activities. He stated that the amendment is 'direct, narrow, and simple' in its approach, only addressing the issue of DeFi protocols being used for money laundering or evading sanctions.

Senator Lummis, on the other hand, expressed concern that adding a 'DeFi additional clause' to the bill could send a negative signal about software development. She emphasized the importance of embedding digital assets within the existing U.S. legal framework rather than starting anew.
